RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
