A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
